PROCEEDS BENEFIT DESTINATIONS with DIRECTIONS
This program for students at Phoenixville Area High School gives opportunities to transition to post-secondary education.
The idea that “children are our future” gets sprinkled in political rhetoric year after year.
This belief can become lost in the agenda most people have to attend to on a daily basis. Fortunately, there are programs like Destinations with Direction that are there to help make sure that the belief in our nation’s youth is acted upon consistently.
According to the Phoenixville Community Education Foundation (PCEF), the program was co-founded in 2007 by Dr. Craig Parkinson, then assistant principal and now principal at Phoenixville Area High School. Economically disadvantaged students who might have missed out on certain opportunities are shown the ways to make a post-secondary education possible.
The program is open to promising sophomores through seniors who’ve shown a desire to work toward that opportunity. It's funded through sponsors each year.
“Thus far, a combined total of 41 students have participated, with 12 graduating seniors,” the PCEF website stated at the close of the 2009-2010 school year. “Of the graduates, 11 have continued onto college. Of those enrolled in college, 10 have remained in college: five will complete their sophomore year this year, and five will complete their freshmen year. Within this population, six are on the Dean’s List.”
Destinations with Direction currently has more than 30 members and meets every Thursday for an hour after school. The club helps students become better prepared for life after high school with tours of colleges, explanations of the application process and teaching of advanced leadership skills.
During the most recent meeting, the after-school program taught students values through slideshows, videos and very engaging discussions.
The students learned about the importance of the “ships” that will help them stay on course as they navigate toward college: membership, leadership, relationships and hardship. This lesson was just one example of the knowledge that is offered through Destinations with Direction.
Hannah Jasrenski, a student member of the program, spoke of how useful the recent college tours in the Boston area were. She said the program helped students improve their writing skills, learn about applications and understand what they needed to do in school and outside of school to be more successful in receiving college acceptance letters.
She said Destinations with Direction did a lot to put into perspective that she and fellow students had something to do after high school.
Ryan Howard is one of the instructors leading the program for Phoenixville Area High School and Jasrenski is just one of the many students whose college career has been directed by his contribution and guidance.
As Destinations with Direction wraps up its fourth year, the program has helped dozens of students find their way in the transition from high school to college.
